Shipley-based Halliday Clark has won the invited competition to build an extension to Frank Matchem’s Grade II*-listed Theatre Royal Wakefield
The practice saw off the Manchester office of TP Bennett and Sheffield’s CODA Studios to land the scheme which will see a new Centre of Creativity added to the 1894 building - the smallest of the 200 Matcham-designed theatres which still survives.
The £400,000 project is first phase of a larger masterplan to restore and refurbish the main theatre building.
According to the firm, the winning design ’creates a highly flexible performance and rehearsal space including a bar and booking office [and features] a double height shop window allowing passers-by to view deep into the building and witness the movement of performers within’.
Planning and listed building consent will be submitted next month (February).
