Groupwork + Amin Taha has received permission for an £8 million overhaul of a 1970s office block in Clerkenwell which includes an historically inspired brass mesh facade
Camden Council’s planning committee granted consent to the local practice’s proposals for 20-23 Greville Street near Farringdon station in central London.
The scheme, backed by Seaforth Land, will see replacement cladding, demolition of a plant room and creation of a two-storey roof extension and a five-storey rear extension.
An entrance will be reinstated on Bleeding Heart Yard as the practice looks to extend the footprint of the building to restore its Edwardian grandeur.

Practice principal Amin Taha said the project would ‘follow the pre-demolition survey information found by heritage consultant Donald Insall for the six properties pre-dating the current office building. The mesh will follow all cornice, pediment, window, door and roof forms of these.
‘A sample panel was erected at second-floor level to demonstrate how from a distance the material and form appear solid but on approach reveals itself to be ephemeral, a ghost and shroud of the past, transparent when daylight is seen through its corners and light to the touch.’
An objection letter was sent to the council by occupants of Bleeding Heart Yard, raising fears the scheme would have a negative impact on the character of the yard as well as claims of ‘poor design’.
But planning officers described the proposals as representing ‘an interesting architectural solution’ and said the project would enhance the appearance of the existing building and the wider Hatton Garden Conservation Area. The scheme was approved by councillors subject to conditions.
