Graeme Nicholls wins first major commission

Emerging practice Graeme Nicholls Architects has submitted plans for its ‘first significant commission’ – a 24-flat scheme in Pollokshaws, Glasgow

The 2,135m2 project for Merchant Homes Partnerships will be built on the site of the former Pollokshaws Swimming Baths in Ashtree Road.

According to the studio, which is led by former Gareth Hoskins Architects talent Graeme Nicholls, the scheme’s two blocks ‘synthesise the prevalent typologies’ of the neighbouring streets – a tenement block to the north and a villa-type block in Christian Street on the plot’s southern edge.

Subject to planning approval, the black brick-clad development could start on site this spring and complete early in 2018.

The architect’s view

Our two flexible flat layouts can accommodate a variety of living arrangements by the inclusion of unique architectural devices which encourage user customisation.

Conceptually, our project seeks to develop a narrative which relates to the history of Pollokshaws. The neighbourhood flourished as a centre of textile production in the 19th Century, which resulted in an influx of skilled Flemish weavers to help meet the workforce demands. Using human scale and proportions as a starting point, we have included a series of motifs related to both weaving and Flemish architecture throughout the design, including a woven pattern created across the façade in the careful placement of windows, the use of Flemish bond and textures in the black brick cladding, and more.
