Government to relax 'solid wall' planning rules to boost Green Deal uptake

The government has relaxed planning rules in a bid to make insulating homes easier

The clarification agreed by the Department for Energy and Climate Change and the Department for Communities and Local Governments confirms that solid wall insulation, which is commonly fitted to the external elevations of a property, will be classed as a permitted development.

These changes come in ahead of the launch of the government’s Green Deal scheme at the end of the month.

Under the new rules, insulation installations will be classified as an improvement, rather than an extension or an enlargement and will not require planning permission.

Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas will still be subject to specific planning permission, and the new permitted development rules will not apply to them.
