Who are you?
Graeme Nicholls. I trained at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, and at North Carolina State University, USA, and previously worked at Hoskins Architects.
When did you set up?
What was your breakthrough project and why?
A residential project for 24 flats at Ashtree Road here in Glasgow has been the first one to get noticed. It has been well received both by the client and by the public.

What are you currently working on?
Ashtree Road is furthest along, but I am looking at a wide range of jobs including an exhibition design in Glasgow, an arts project in the east end, and feasibility studies for hotels and residential developments.
How hopeful are you about your prospects as a young practice in Glasgow?

I have an ambition to work nationally and internationally; previous projects and competition schemes I’ve worked on have been in locations such as London, Liverpool, Dublin, the United States, and Hong Kong.

What is the biggest challenge facing your practice?
Making a foothold in a market with other established firms will be a challenge, but it’s one I’m looking forward to.
How will you ensure you remain profitable?
Some of the other larger projects I have been working on will push forward soon and help to build momentum for the practice.
Which architects inspire your practice and why?
My great architectural heroes include Emilio Ambasz, John Hejduk, Hans van der Laan, Archigram, Superstudio, and of course Le Corbusier. I undertook a ‘pilgrimage’ last year, travelling around France to see some of his most important works. Ronchamp was mind blowing.
