Work on the 14-storey Ritz Carlton, which will be located in the heart of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), has now started on site and the hotel is expected to open its doors in late 2008.
It will provide a wide range of facilities, including 340 guestrooms and suites, 124 serviced apartments and 7,000m 2of retail space with parking.
The palatial hotel will sit next to Gensler's recently completed DIFC Gate Building and is to be linked to it by a covered retail arcade.
Christopher Johnson, managing principal of Gensler London, said: 'We have presented an urban solution which reflects Ritz's longstanding tradition and complements DIFC's urban design. We believe the hotel will enhance life in the inner city and give further credibility to the district.'
Dubai's ruling family hopes the DIFC - close to Dubai's main highway, the Sheikh Zayed Road - will become one of the world's leading financial centres, creating a new central business district for the long-term growth of the city.
