Funding boost for Scott Brownrigg's Welsh convention centre plans

AJ100 practice Scott Brownrigg has been commissioned to carry out detailed design work for the Wales International Convention Centre at the Celtic Manor resort near Newport

The move follows confirmation of a loan-funding deal for the project between the Welsh Government and Celtic Manor.

Scott Brownrigg’s concept designs for the scheme, which will be located close to the resort’s existing hotels at Coldra Woods, won outline planning permission in July.

The scheme will provide a venue with a total capacity in excess of 20,000m2, including a main auditorium capable of accommodating 1,300 delegates and a separate 4,000m2 main exhibition hall.

Celtic Manor said the facility would be the largest of its kind in both Wales and the south west of England.

Neil MacOmish, group board director at Scott Brownrigg, said the project brief called for a building that expressed ‘a permanence and longevity’.

‘The design concept provides a simple ground-scraper – an amorphic organic gridshell that both hugs and abstracts the landscape but equally makes an enigmatic iconic statement to the adjacent M4 motorway,’ he said.

‘It also continues the stratification of the landscape terraces that form part of the wooded topography of the site.’
