Foster’s ‘six-star’ Capella Hotel to host Trump-Kim summit

A Norman Foster-designed luxury hotel on a tropical Singaporean island will be the venue for the hotly anticipated ‘nuclear summit’ between US president Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un

The White House has confirmed the architect’s 12ha Capella Resort on Sentosa Island as the venue for the 12 June meeting, the first ever encounter between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

The meeting, to discuss demilitarisation of the Korean peninsula, was initially called off but has now been salvaged with Trump saying plans were ‘moving along nicely’.

On Tuesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted: ‘The venue for the Singapore summit between @POTUS and Leader Kim Jong-un will be the Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island. We thank our great Singaporean hosts for their hospitality.’

Sentosa Island is located off the Singapore coast, and was used as a Japanese prisoner of war camp for British and Australian servicemen after allied forces surrendered to the Japanese in 1942.

But today the secluded island is known for its luxury beach hotels, amusement parks, golf courses and tourist attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore.

Fosters’ 112-room hotel, which the practice describes as ‘six-star’, was completed in 2009 and features several grand colonial-era buildings as well as three pools.

According to the Fosters website, ‘the design of the six-star Capella Resort brings together old and new in a tropical context.

‘It integrates two Tanah Merah military buildings – dating from the 1880s and built as recreational spaces for officers – with a new hotel, villas, extensive event spaces and a spa.’

Parts of the island surrounding the Capella hotel have been marked out as a special security zone on the days around the summit.
