Work has started on a Foster + Partners waterfront complex in Casablanca, the firm’s first project in Morocco
The 90,000m2 development will extend the wealthy residential district of Anfa, adding apartments, offices, shops and a 5-star hotel. Carved into the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it is designed to draw the city towards the sea through a series of terraces.
Pedestrians will access Anfa Place’s apartments at roof-level, via gardens and bridges, while cars are directed into underground parking. An elevated promenade will house a plaza with cafes, restaurants and bars, connecting the road to the beach.
The design maximises sea views but is also meant to reflect the vernacular. Foster has chosen local materials and simple construction techniques, buildings are interspersed with private courtyards and trees, and facades are designed to promote natural ventilation, control solar gain and exploit the cooling properties of thermal mass.
