Foster revs up with Spanish Motor City sports centre - image

Foster and Partners' international bandwagon shows no sign of slowing down after the practice won the high-profile contest to design a new 'carbon neutral' Motor City sports centre in Spain.

The British practice's proposal to create a huge new leisure and cultural zone in Alcañiz, Aragon was chosen ahead of schemes by Jean Nouvel, Dominique Perrault, UNStudio and MVRDV.

Allegedly inspired by the 'sleek aerodynamic aesthetic of the racing car', the Ciudad del Motor scheme will boast a lightweight roof which will float over the entire complex.

Integrated into the roof will be photovoltaic cells, solar thermal tubes and an array of wind turbines.

This sweeping structure will 'culminate in [an illuminated] tower which gives the development its identity.'

Describing the proposals, Norman Foster said: 'Motor City will be an exciting 21st-century culture and leisure destination for the city of Alcañiz and the wider region of Aragon.

'Inspired by the contours of the landscape, with volumes that are sculpted by the elements, it will form a dynamic counterpoint to this historic city - a carbon neutral centre of excellence for motor sport that will be an exemplar of sustainable design for Spain with a place on the world stage.'
