Foster + Partners is working on an extension to the practice’s £300million McLaren Technology Centre in Woking

The AJ100 chart-topper has submitted planning for a 57,000m² extension to the car production plant in rural Surrey - the first phase of which was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2005. The practice returned to deliver a 17,760m² production centre on neighbouring land in 2009 (AJ 26.05.09).
The latest scheme includes an aerodynamic research facility, workshops, research and development space, offices, meeting rooms, teaching and training space, and vehicle preparation and assembly spaces.
The new building would see the footprint of the McLaren Production Centre doubled in size.
The project, however, has already come under fire from neighbours and conservationists concerned over the project’s impact on the surrounding countryside.
But, speaking to the local press, local MP Jonathan Lord said he was in support of the expansion project.
‘It’s my understanding that this planning permission is going through all the correct processes. McLaren is a technology company that is globally renown and this development would bring future high quality jobs to this part of Surrey’, he said.
Woking Borough Council is expected to make a decision on the scheme next month.
