Foster + Partners has completed its refurbishment of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich
Opened in 1978 the Grade II–listed building, which is on campus at the University of East Anglia, was one of Norman Foster’s first major commissions.
The refurbishment includes the creation of a new East Gallery, improved access to the main building and the transformation of existing downstairs spaces into a new suite of galleries.
The scheme is the third time the building has been reconfigured, a fact that Foster + Partners claimed highlighted ‘…the flexibility of the original design.’
An exhibition of more than 250 objects and works of art inspired by, or produced in, East Anglia has been opened to mark the unveiling of the new gallery.
