FLACQ faces global starchitects in contest for top-secret Bahrain scheme

  • Comment
Up-and-coming London practice FLACQ has found itself in a remarkable four-horse race against some of the biggest names in world architecture after making it into the finals of a top-secret Middle East design competition.

It is understood the firm, which is headed by four former Rogers protégés, has been shortlisted alongside both Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas to draw up plans for a hush-hush project in Bahrain. The other finalist is not known.

According to information obtained by the AJ, the quartet has been asked to come up with proposals for a massive 20-hectare masterplan for the oil-rich island in the Persian Gulf.

The mystery developer is believed to have invited FLACQ to enter the contest after spotting the practice's competition-winning Morecambe Bay scheme for Urban Splash ( ajplus 27.02.06).

Further details about the scheme, or when a winner will be announced, still remain firmly under wraps.
