First of Hackney’s new wave of council housing approved

  • Comment

Hackney Council has approved plans by emerging practice Al-Jawad Pike for the first of its new wave of local authority-built homes

Replacing disused garages in Mandeville Street, Clapton, the 11-home scheme forms the vanguard for the east London borough’s Housing Supply Programme, which aims to build more than 400 homes on 14 infill sites.

About 70 per cent of all the homes have been earmarked for social rent and shared ownership,

As well as this scheme by Hackney-based Al-Jawad Pike, which was set up by former David Chipperfield architects Dean Pike and Jessam Al-Jawad in 2014, the Housing Supply Programme also includes proposals by Ash Sakula, Mikhail Riches Architects, Surman Weston and Lynch Architects (see AJ 17.06.17).

Speaking about its council housing programme, mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville said: ’Although only small developments themselves, these homes prove that Hackney is building and will spearhead our latest council housing drive as we look to provide hundreds of new council homes on underused land across Hackney.

‘Focusing on smaller sites like these has allowed us to work with up-and-coming new practices who have come up with innovative responses to site constraints in order to design genuinely affordable new council homes that make a fantastic contribution to their neighbourhood.’

Work on the scheme is expected to start on site later this year and to complete in 2020.
