Seth Stein unveils reclaimed stone country house

  • Comment

Seth Stein Architects has completed this 1,000m² house in area of outstanding beauty near Bath, Somerset

Built on the site of a group of farm buildings the house stands on a steep north facing slope overlooking a valley.

The house, which is constructed from stone salvaged from the former buildings on the plot, is arranged around two large courtyard gardens on two separate levels. A raised timber-clad block above the stone storey contains the bedrooms.

Designed to achieve a sustainable rating equivalent to Code for Sustainable Homes level 5, a wind turbine and photovoltaic panels positioned near the house, along with an air-source heat pump are predicted to produce 150 per cent of the house’s required energy

The practice won the project following an invited competition in 2009.
