David Mikhail revamps listed London townhouse

David Mikhail Architects has restored and extended a grade II-listed house in east London

The Clerkenwell-based practice has returned the 16m-wide Georgian house - previously subdivided into a house with two basement flats - into a single family home.

The 600m² five-storey house has been extensively remodelled with recent internal additions and subdivisions removed and the entrance hallway restored to its original arrangement.

Long section

The rear of the property has been excavated and extended with an addition that contains an-open plan kitchen and family room that opens onto a landscaped garden of brick walls and terraces. Along with these living spaces the basement contains two bedrooms and a longue, with the master bedroom suite on the first floor, two bedrooms above and a further bedroom and rooftop terrace on the top floor.

In January 2011 the practice’s overhaul of a Victorian House in Hackney, featuring a one metre-deep glass extension, won the NLA’s second annual Don’t Move, Improve! competition (see AJ 07.01.2011).
