Fire Brigade called to blaze inside Olympic Stadium

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the Queen Elizabeth Park this morning (29 October) after a fire was reported at Populous’ Olympic Stadium

Reports on Twitter suggested that Populous’ Stirling Prize-nominated Olympic Stadium was on fire as a plume of smoke rose from the landmark arena.

Leyton Village (@LeytonVillage) asked if the ‘Olympic stadium is on fire?’ and Adam Rivers (@gamblingecon) tweeted: ‘The Olympic stadium appears to be on fire’.

However, the The London Fire Brigade quickly corrected the rumours, reporting that the £429 million building, which is set to become the new home of West Ham United, was not alight.

Fire crews had in fact responded to a ‘van on fire’ inside the stadium, with the LFB satting that ‘one fire engine attended & crews quickly put the fire out’.

The stadium, which was the centrepiece of London’s 2012 Olympics is currently undergoing a conversion to become a football stadium, with West Ham Football Club scheduled to occupy the building in time for the 2016-2017 season.
