Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) has drawn up plans for a 22-storey building opposite Manchester’s Arndale Centre
The practice, which has recently moved its Manchester office to a larger studio in nearby Dale Street, was appointed by developer CEG for the project to replace a 1970s office block at 20-36 High Street.
The 32,800m² scheme will provide 361 homes as well as shops and leisure facilities. It will replace mostly vacant offices across two buildings on the site, the larger of the pair designed by local practice Leach Rhodes Walker.
FCBS partner Alex Whitbread said the practice wanted to create an ‘iconic landmark’.
’The architecture refers to the city’s past, drawing on the adjacent Debenhams and grand office buildings such as [the 1930s Grade II-listed] Sunlight House to create a new building which is distinctly and proudly Mancunian,’ he added.
FCBS has also designed proposals to relocate market stalls on Church Street to new accommodation offering indoor and outdoor areas next to the nearby Church Street car park.
CEG head of strategic development in the North David Hodgson said the firm had listened to the public regarding the site.
‘We have responded to feedback from last year’s consultation event by delivering a roof terrace and courtyard garden onto Birchin Lane,’ he said.
‘We are also proposing to reopen the historic Stationer’s Court as a covered plaza, which will provide access through the building from the High Street out to the Northern Quarter with distinctive shops and restaurants offering covered and outdoor seating.’
