Ex-FAT director Sean Griffiths has unveiled plans to extend the practice’s much-loved Blue House in East London
Griffiths’ new practice Modern Architect has received planning permission to add a roof extension to the home which completed in 2002.
The house, which is Griffiths’ own home, currently contains living spaces and an office. This existing studio will now become part of the home with the new extension becoming an office space.
The design of the roof extension features a series of interconnected sheds with their heights determined by the need to minimised overshadowing and overlooking for the surrounding properties.
According to Griffiths the plans ‘extend the building’s original character’, which he once described as ‘Southpark on the outside and Adolf Loos on the inside’.
The scheme will be clad in timber-grained cement fibreboard cladding to match that on the original blue house.
A number of abstract elements forming an extended chimney and articulated window boxes connect with the shed shapes to create a varied roofscape screened by the existing façade parapets.
