Emerging practice wins planning for brace of Royal Park schemes

  • Comment

Up-and-coming outfit Reed Watts has been granted permission for a pair of schemes in London’s Royal Parks

The practice has gained approval for 420m² of new facilities at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park and for a 550m² pavilion for Teddington Cricket Club in Bushy Park.

According to the firm, which was set up last year by former Haworth Tompkins architects Matt Watts and Jim Reed, the predominantly timber theatre project will include a new rehearsal studio, upgraded kitchen facilities and offices at the 1930s venue.

The project follows on from Haworth Tompkins’ £2 million scheme at the theatre, which completed in 2012 and features year-round office accommodation previously located off-site, improved dressing rooms, workshops and a new box office and sheltered seating canopy (see AJ 30.12.12).

Across the capital the practice is also working on a scheme to replace two Second World War Nissen Huts, which are currently used as the pavilion for Teddington Cricket Club.

The original 1896 cricket pavilion was severely damaged during the First World War. It was repaired in 1921 but burned down in 1945. Two years later the club’s current base was erected using the huts salvaged from a US army encampment in Bushy Park.

The new pavilion will double the existing accommodation and includes four new changing rooms, two large social spaces and a roof terrace.

The practice claims the L-shaped form ‘provides views to both pitches and across the park, whilst shielding the back-of-house areas from public view.’

Both schemes will start on site this year and are expected to complete in 2018.
