Eight winning projects for RIBA South West awards revealed

Feilden Fowles’ pie factory in Somerset has been named Building of the Year in the RIBA’s South West region

The 6,500m² plant for UK ready-meals company Charlie Bingham, located in a former limestone quarry, is among the winners of RIBA Regional Awards announced at an event in Bath on Wednesday evening (16 May).

In all there are eight winners in the RIBA South West region, six less than the 14 schemes honoured in the 2017 South West Awards last year.

Kyle Buchanan, from emerging practice Archio, was named Project Architect of the Year for Temple Gardens, a housing scheme built around a Grade II-listed pub in Somerset.

There were are also accolades for James Grayley Architects’ cottage in Bath, which won Small Project of the Year and 6a Architects, which took home the Conservation Award for its Coastal House scheme in Cornwall.

Two Bristol schemes were honoured, with Emmett Russell Architects receiving the Sustainability Award for its social housing scheme at Challender Court and the North Bristol NHS Trust, the backer for BDP’s Brunel Hospital, winning Client of the Year.

There were also regional gongs for two Cornish schemes: Stan Bolt Architect’s house renovation, Pengwynver, and the new extension to Tate St Ives by Jamie Fobert Architects with Evans and Shalev.

Jo Wright, chair of the South West jury, said: ‘Submissions for the 2018 RIBA Awards in the South West encompassed a huge range of scales and typologies, from single rooms to vast and complex buildings.

’The winners are differentiated by their quality and creativity, which grows out of client ambition, architectural excellence and great delivery teams.’

All the regional award winners will be considered for the RIBA National Awards, with the successful recipients announced in June. Those collecting national awards will then be considered for the RIBA Stirling Prize.
