dRMM’s Oldham Maggie’s takes top honours in RIBA North West regional awards

The Oldham Maggie’s Centre by 2017 Stirling Prize-winning practice dRMM was crowned building of the year at the RIBA North West’s regional award ceremony last night (16 May)

Understood to be the world’s first hardwood CLT building, the cancer care centre also scooped the region’s top sustainability prize, and dRMM senior associate Jasmin Sohi picked up the Project Architect of the yYear award for her work on the scheme.

It is the second year in a row that a Maggie’s Centre has landed the building of the year title in the North West. Last year the Robert Parfett Building in Manchester by Foster + Partners won the top prize.

The dRMM-designed centre at the Royal Oldham Hospital was one of six winners of RIBA North West regional awards revealed at the event in the One Fine Day café in Liverpool.

The list included AHMM’s Royal Court theatre in Liverpool, which was resubmitted by the practice for RIBA honours, having been overlooked in 2017.

The revamp of the Grade II-listed Art Deco theatre – the winner of the 2016 AJ Retrofit Awards – also took home the region’s conservation award.

It was a big night, too, for emerging Liverpool-based design studio Architectural Emporium. The firm won the region’s Emerging Practice of the Year Award while Walk the Plank, the outdoor arts organisation behind a new complex in Salford designed by Architectural Emporium, was named Client of the Year.

RIBA North West regional director Andrew Ruffler said: ‘We are delighted to see a home-grown small practice in Architectural Emporium win a number of awards for its work in Salford for Walk the Plank, and we hope that this is a trend which continues in future years, with up-and-coming practices recognised for their high-quality work right across the region.’

Chosen from a shortlist of nine projects, there were also RIBA regional awards for 101 Embankment in Salford by Flanagan Lawrence, Storyhouse in Chester by Bennetts Associates, and Timekeepers Square in Salford by Buttress.

These regional winners will now be considered for the RIBA National Awards, with the successful recipients announced in July. Those collecting national awards will then be put forward for the RIBA Stirling Prize.
