DRDH and Julian Harrap shortlisted for Antwerp theatre revamp

DRDH with Julian Harrap Architects have been shortlisted in an international competition to restore a historical neo-classical theatre in Antwerp

The London-based team is up against local firm’s DMT with Steenmeijer architecten, Gent’s Robbrecht en Daem, Brussels-based SumProject and TenBrasWestinga of The Netherlands, in the contest to restore the Bourlaschouwburg Theatre.

The project will restore the building, which was designated a protected monument in 1834, while meeting the needs of its resident theatre company Het Toneelhuis.

The 900-seat theatre was completed by Antwerp city architect Pierre Bourla in 1834 and is the last remaining municipal theatre in Europe.

The architects will now work on the next stage of the contest and a winning team is set to be announced in 2016.
