Design team sought for £66m Burrell Collection overhaul

  • Comment

Glasgow City Council is on the hunt for a project manager-led design team to regenerate its Grade A-listed Burrell Collection

Planned to complete in 2019, the project will restore the landmark Barry Gasson, John Meunier and Brit Andresen-designed building which currently suffers from water ingress.

Floor space inside the L-shaped 1983 building will also be increased four times, allowing 90 per cent of the museum’s 9,000-item collection to be displayed.

Located in the suburban Pollock Country Park, the museum houses the collection of William Burrell who was a wealthy Glaswegian shipping magnate and art collector.

Recognised as one of Scotland’s finest post-war buildings, the Burrell Collection hosts Chinese art, late gothic and early Renaissance art, and several paintings by French artist Edgar Degas.

Gasson, Meunier and Andresen won an open design contest for the structure in 1971 and the building was opened by the Queen twelve years later.

Current plans would see the iconic structure receive a new roof, high-performance glazing, two new floors of exhibition space, and the opening of its basement stores.

A new visitor entrance, café, and learning area would also be created. The collection is expected to close next year and reopen in 2019.

The winning project manager-led design team will develop designs from RIBA Stage 0 to 7. An exhibition designer is also sought in a separate parallel tender.

The deadline for requests to participate for the project manager-led design team contract is 12noon on 10 September. The deadline for the exhibition design role is 12noon on 9 September.
