Design Engine has seen off Foster + Partners to win the race to build a new headquarters for Formula 1 car designer Gordon Murray
The Winchester-based practice, which recently returned to London, opening a new studio in Southwark, landed the 8,500m² development following an invited competition with an undisclosed number of participants.
The three-stage scheme in Shalford, Surrey, for automotive engineer Gordon Murray Design (GMD) features six new buildings on a site close to the company’s existing headquarters.
A new design and engineering block will be built in the first phase, followed by main offices and restaurant in phase two and the remainder in phase three.
GMD is led by Gordon Murray, who has designed Formula 1 World Championship-winning cars for Brabham and McLaren, as well as the McLaren F1 road car, over a 50-year career. The company was set up in 2007 to develop an innovative manufacturing technology trademarked iStream.

Design Engine founding director Richard Jobson said: ‘The crossover between automotive design and buildings has fascinated architects ever since the first production car was completed.
’We are excited about the huge sustainable opportunities the new iStream cars will offer and feel privileged to be able to play a small part in that vision.’
The scheme will be submitted for planning in Spring 2018 with work expected to start on site in July 2018.
