Day 24: AJ advent calendar - and the building is....

Dec 24

Were you the first to guess the hidden building we have gradually been uncovering in the run up to Christmas?

No it wasn’t Frank Lloyd Wright’s Larkin Administration Building, Basil Spence’s Coventry Cathedral or Walthamstow Town Hall - a selection of some of the incorrect guesses we received.

The building which we have been revealing during the past month was the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford by Elisabeth Scott.

The art deco theatre opened in 1932 with more than 100,000 coming to see the Prince of Wales open the building.

The brick building was listed in 1971 and in 2010 Bennetts Associates completed a refurbishment of the theatre replacing Scott’s original main auditorium with a 1,000-seat thrust stage.

John Allan of Avanti Architects was the first person to guess correctly bagging a copy of Mecanoo Architecten: People Place Purpose by Francine Houben.

Merry Christmas!
