Darling submits plans to turn listed Fulham landmark back into school

Darling Associates has revealed plans to convert the Grade II-listed Castle Club building in Fulham, which was originally designed as a school but had been used as a home, back into a school

The dilapidated Gothic mansion in the Hurlingham Conservation Area, Parsons Green, south west London will become the new 300-pupil senior school for the Fulham Prep School.

The AJ100 practice was appointed by property investment and development company, The Thackeray Estate on the major revamp which includes a ’sympathetic modern extension’ to create significant extra floor space.

Originally founded as a ‘ragged school’ in 1855, the run-down existing building has had a variety of uses including a youth club and, in the last decade, a residential dwelling.

Damion Burrows, director at Darling Associates, said: ’Our design will reinvigorate and reinstate a local landmark building, while fully respecting and retaining the school’s historic character and principal architecture.

’The new extension is designed to sympathetically integrate with and mirror the school’s massing, carefully unifying both historic and contemporary design, and further enhancing the existing streetscape in this conservation area.’

The practice has already undertaken a ’thorough consultation process’ and expects to hear whether the plans have been approved later this month.
