Rogers' lands prized Lyon airport project

Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport has handed the design of its new Future Terminal 1 to Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP)

The practice, which won the 2006 Stirling Prize with its Barajas airport in Madrid, will mastermind the expansion of the French airport, allowing it to welcome an extra 5 million passengers a year on top of the 10 million which already use it

The 70,000m² circular building, made up of ‘bold, simple and elegant structural elements’, has been designed not to ‘detract from the distinctive’ bird-like TGV train station at the airport by Spanish star Santiago Calatrava which opnend in 1994.

Rogers’ terminal will boast ‘a spacious and clearly defined entrance, a hanging garden’ together with a huge shopping area at its heart.

Graham Stirk, senior partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, designer of the project said: ‘The existing airport campus has a very distinctive structural and architectural language in both form and colour.

‘This DNA determines the character of the new proposal. We look forward to working with GFC Construction and Aéroports de Lyon to create a new European gateway to the city and its region.”
