Hawkes wins green light for underground PPS7 home in Kent

  • Comment

Hawkes Architecture has won permission for this subterranean PPS7 country house on the outskirts of Canterbury, Kent

The £850,000 home will sit within the Bigbury Camp Iron Age settlement and, according to the Staplehurst-based practice, will be set ‘entirely below ground level in a new ecologically rich heathland habitat’.

The 326m² project features a ‘never-before-used free radical water treatment system’, combined heat and power generating solar panels and will be built from local timber and crushed cockle shells from Whitstable, which will make up the floor.

Planning consent was won under the rarely used ‘contemporary country house clause’ (Clause 11 of Planning Policy Statement 7 or PPS7) which states that the ‘exceptional quality and innovative nature of the design’ of a proposed building may provide ‘special justification for granting planning permission.’
