[First look + project data] GMW has completed a new 150,000m² passenger terminal at the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina
The £680 million project created a new terminal and pier with 18 stands capable of receiving the largest modern passenger aircraft.
The development was the first phase of a masterplan to enlarge the airport which is a key arrival point for pilgrims during Saudi Arabia’s annual Hajj.
According to a statement from the practice: ‘For much of the year Medina Airport is relatively quiet, handling mostly domestic flights and limited international services to regional destinations.
‘However, during the Hajj season the airport is transformed by international charter flights, which triple its traffic. More than a million Hajj pilgrims use the airport each year and, together with around four million Umrah travellers, make it the fourth busiest airport in Saudi Arabia.’
Later phases will see the airport capacity increase to 8 mllion passengers by 2023 and to 16 million passengers by 2037.
The terminal design is modular to allow easy expansion and features a series of columns inspired by palm trees. Six air-conditioned pavilions with tensile-fabric roofs have been constructed next to the terminal to accommodate Hajj passengers at peak times.
GMW’s scheme also expanded and upgraded two existing runways and created new taxi ways and apron space for 20 remote stands.
