Farrell shortlisted for Guangzhou museum

TFP Farrells is among eight teams shortlisted for a new £96 million museum in Guangzhou, China

The Chinese arm of Terry Farrell’s studio is the only firm with a UK connection vying for the 80,000m² facility West of Lingnan Square.

Other practices competing for the Guangzhou Bureau of Science and IT-backed scheme include Bernard Tschumi, Lacaton & Vassal, BIG and Guangzhou Hanhua.

Scottish Parliament designers Miralles Tagliabue EMBT are also contenders for the project.

Stefan Krummeck, director of TFP Farrells’ Hong Kong office said: ‘We are delighted to be shortlisted for the competition of international architecture design for Guangzhou museum.’

He continued: ‘This reflects our on-going commitment to working in China and recognition of our growing reputation in the design of international cultural projects.’

The new building will be constructed on a 4.35 hectare site in the southern part of Guangzhou’s new urban central axis near to the city’s landmark, 600 metre-tall Canton Tower.

Grimshaw has meanwhile been shortlisted in a parallel competition to design a £113 million science museum to the east of Lingnan Square.

The outfit is up against eight finalists including MAD and Stven Holl Architects.

The projects are among four major venues planned for China’s third largest city including a new art gallery and culture centre. Zaha Hadid completed a 1,800-seat opera house in Guangzhou four years ago.

The sixteen finalists will receive around £56,000 each to develop their designs ahead of a judging deadline in November.

Three winning teams will be chosen for each building and will receive £28,000 each. Two of the schemes will then be selected for construction with their teams awarded a design contract.
