Ex-CABE director heads Elephant and Castle regeneration forum

Former CABE Space director Sarah Gaventa has been appointed chair of the Elephant and Castle regeneration forum

Backed by Lend Lease, the forum brings together 160 stakeholder groups in the south London town centre which is tipped for large-scale regeneration over the next 15 years.

A range of participants including representatives of health, disability and education groups in the area have been invited to feedback on Elephant and Castle’s regeneration plans, according to the developer.

Earlier this month, Lend Lease revealed a Make-designed masterplan for the redevelopment of the area, announcing it would need up to 12 architects to assist in the 8.8 hectare site’s detailed design. The company was appointed development partner for the project in 2007.

Rob Deck, Lend Lease project director said: ‘It’s been fantastic to see a positive start to our consultation and the enthusiasm that local people have for their area and for getting involved in this process.

‘We’re also delighted Sarah Gaventa has been appointed to the role of Chair of the Forum. Sarah’s experience as a former director of CABE Space, the body which until recently undertook specialist review of the design of public spaces together with her passion for great design of such spaces makes her an ideal choice for this role. The Forum is an important element of our consultation at the Elephant and Castle.’

Gaventa added: ‘As the independent chair of the Forum I am looking forward to supporting the local Elephant and Castle community and facilitating a productive dialogue which I hope will contribute to creating an excellent regeneration project that benefits local people.’
