The practice, which has recently changed its name from Nicholas Burwell Architects to recognise the increasing role of William Deakins, landed the 4,100m2 project in July 2008 after seeing off a competition shortlist which included BDP, Aedas, Alec French Architects and HLM.
Sitting in the grounds of the Grade II-listed Tremough House, the naturally ventilated building is arranged around a three-storey gallery and houses teaching and performing space for drama, music, dance and choreography.
The 20-strong Deptford firm collaborated on the BREEAM Excellent-rated project with Exeter-based Grainge Architects,
RIBA Stage A - D: Burwell Deakins Architects (previously Nicholas Burwell Architects).
RIBA Stage E - L: Design and Build, with Burwell Deakins Architects acting as client’s advisers, and Grange Architects as executive architects.
