More than 400 cyclists held a vigil last night (20 April) at the junction where design champion Moira Gemmill was killed while cycling to work at St James Palace

Road safety activists and friends of Gemmill took part in the rush hour ‘die in’ at Lambeth Bridge after she became the fifth cyclist to die on London’s roads this year.
Among those who led tributes to Gemmill were deputy V&A director Beth McKillop who gave a speech at the start of the event.
The vigil was organised by cycling campaign group Stop Killing Cyclists.
Co-organiser Nicola Branch told the Evening Standard: ‘A lot of the anger is because the junction was up for redesign but objections from the council meant those changes weren’t made.’
‘We feel if they had been there’s every likelihood Moira would still be here today.’
She added: ‘I would like private cars banned from the centre of London. They’re not needed. We also need HGV lorries not to come into the centre of cities during the daytime.’
The vigil comes just days after cycling safety campaigner and NLA boss Peter Murray demanded the construction industry take action after it emerged that four of the five cyclists killed this year on the capital’s roads were involved in accidents with heavy goods vehicles from the sector (AJ 16.04.15).
