Installation by Cecil Balmond opens in Spitalfields

An installation by designer Cecil Balmond has opened in London’s Spitalfields Market after returning from a tour of the USA, Japan and Italy

The work – entitled ‘H_Edge’ – is made up of 4,500 cross-shaped aluminium plates which are held together on stainless steel chains.

A bespoke configuration for the sculpture was designed for the London site, which covers approximately 42sqm and which is illuminated at night.

Describing his sculpture, Cecil Balmond said: ‘There is no hard edge or boundary due to a fractal organisation - the whole reflects the unit part. Made out of plates and chains that seemingly stand up, the method applies a repeating logic that never reaches a conclusion.’

H_Edge has previously been exhibited in the USA (New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh), Japan and Italy (Milan and Florence). It will remain at Spitalfields until 20 October 2014.
