GUN Architects designs 'micro-climate' pavilion for AA

  • Comment

GUN Architects has designed a pavilion with its own ‘micro-climate’ which will be installed at Bedford Square outside the Architectural Association in May

Entitled ‘Rainforest’, the 5m-tall pavilion by the Chilean-German practice features real plant life sheltered by a canopy of canvas ‘stalactites’.

Some of the stalactites drip water into pools on the ground, which is then pumped back up into the canopy structure.

The pavilion continues GUN Architecture’s research into the dynamics of Chile’s climate and environmental water circulation and will be accompanied by an exhibition at the Architectural Association.

The pavilion forms part of the Architectural Association’s Projects Review 2014, the school’s annual display of student work, as well as the London Festival of Architecture. However, it does not mark a return to the AA’s annual summer pavilion programme, which ended in 2009.

The pavilion will be open from 17 May until 19 July 2014.
