CaSA Architects has won permission for this 390m² ‘country house clause’ in rural Somerset
The approval is the latest in a series of schemes to be recently approved under the rarely used Paragraph 55 clause in the National Planning Policy Framework – an exemption allowing new-build homes in the open countryside under ‘special circumstances’.
Since the end of February the AJ has reported on a number of similar victories for AR Design Studios in Buckinghamshire, Studio Spicer in Warwickshire and MatchBox Architects in rural Essex. On average only half a dozen approvals a year are judged to fulfil the criteria of Paragraph 55 – a clause introduced into planning policy in 1997 by then environment secretary John Gummer.
According to the Bath-based practice, the ’environmentally conscious’ home near Frome will sit on the ’edge of a listed parkland’, next to a listed farmhouse.
Ian Walker, director of CaSA Architects, said: ’Integration of the landscape and the architecture is critical to the success of this house.
’This is an extraordinary site, where open parkland sweeps up to the southern timber and glass side of the house, while woodland wraps around the stone sides that also address the nearby public road.
He added: ’The open hand Y-shaped plan, emerges from the tree belt between two large oak trees to reach out, touch and welcome in the wider parkland. Three wings define arrival, garden and parkland zones, which are treated differently in landscape and through elevational design. The open timber side to the house, which contains the family rooms, optimises both the view and solar gain.’
The project is expected to start on site this autumn.
