Contractor found for Adam Knibb’s 1960s house makeover

Work is set to start this year on Adam Knibb Architects’ modern overhaul of a 1960s house after a contractor was chosen for the Hampshire project

The practice’s glass and timber-fronted proposals for 2 Mariners Way in Warsash were approved by Fareham Borough Council earlier this year.

Now Southampton-based Just Wood Southernwork has been chosen as the main builder and work is expected to begin in November.

Planning documents show the scheme will involve removing an existing conservatory and extending the kitchen as well as improving access from ground-floor bedrooms to the garden.

The practice said it was seeking to provide more open-plan space and promote a ‘warm, family-friendly environment while adding personal touches to each of the spaces’.

A large chimney acts as an ‘anchor’ for the house, according to Adam Knibb, and is designed to break-up internal spaces. Timber cladding and solar-efficient glass form much of the external façade of the home.

Planners said the scheme fitted with the local development plan.

‘Given the architectural style of the host dwelling, the proposal does not raise concerns over impact on the character and appearance of the local area,’ added a council report.
