Collective submits ‘iron ore inspired’ Glasgow community centre

  • Comment

Collective Architecture has revealed plans for a new 600m² community centre in Balornock, North Glasgow

According to the practice, the scheme is inspired by the local iron ore mines and ‘reflects the notion of extracting raw material from the ground to create the new building’.

The community centre includes a hall, shops, and ancillary spaces.

The project is expected to start on site in June 2015 and complete in April 2016.

The architect’s view

‘The main multi-use hall within the community centre is defined by ‘handmade’ red clay bricks with imprinted designs based on the history of the site while the shops and ancillary spaces are clad in a textured graphite brick.

‘The glass lantern above the hall is coloured to the spectrum of iron ore while deep window reveals are lined with oxide red to give the appearance of being carved out of the thick walls.’
