Clash gets go-ahead for Mission Gallery revamp

Clash Associates has won planning for its overhaul of Swansea’s Mission Gallery

The Southwark-based practice won the job to revamp the 1868 Grade II-listed building in a contest back in November 2013 (see AJ 22.11.13).

Clash’s plans will refurbish the ground floor gallery and first floor education and office areas.

Extensions to the east of the gallery will provide further exhibition and retail space while a new staircase and lift will allow access into new accessible toilets.

The scheme also includes a new tower to replace the building’s original campanile which was damaged by air raids on the Swansea docks during World War Two.

The new additions to the building, which opened as a gallery in 1977, will be clad in dark-grey patinated zinc.

Amanda Roderick, director of Mission Gallery, said: ‘I am delighted that we have been successful with our planning application and application for listed building consent. This will enable us to make the gallery fully accessible for disabled people, and enable us to provide a better cultural service to the people of Swansea.’

Michael Nixon of client consultant MN Arts Associates, added: ‘The Mission Gallery is of strategic importance to the local authority and the Arts Council of Wales, and is in the Maritime quarter of Swansea close to the National Waterfront Museum. The redevelopment will secure the future of both the building and Mission Gallery.’
