CJCT wins go-ahead for Maida Vale 'mansion block'

AJ120 practice Careyjones Chapmantolcher (CJCT) has won planning for a new £5.5 million mansion block in Westminster

PROJECT DATA 

The 1,785m² development of 15 units on Elgin Avenue features a pair of brick-clad, three-storey blocks and a four-storey building.

The taller block, which wraps around the lower part of the development, boasts a brass ribbed metal box forming the upper floor.

Living rooms and family spaces are highlighted with brass-framed oriel windows aimed at echoing the bays of the Edwardian mansion blocks surrounding the project.

The company, which was shortlisted for the 2015 AJ120 Employer of the Year Award, has designed the scheme as a series of ‘interlocking forms’.

Dan Donnelly, project lead for CJCT, said: ‘Our response to the varied and in places beautiful Edwardian and Victorian architectural context was driven by logical plan forms with exquisite attention to detail. The success of this scheme will rely on those subtle, high quality materials that give the building its identity’

The scheme is set to complete in 2017.

  • If the first image is of the main elevation, there's not a lot 'echoing the bays of the Edwardian mansion blocks....', while there's a fashionable display of gravity defying brickwork, and of ordered chaos in the pattern of solid and void - but the scale shows some respect.
