Chance de Silva has won an invited contest for a new £1.2 million ‘eco church’ in Redcar, Cleveland
Planned to complete in 2018, the 500m² Saint Hilda’s Church and Kirkleatham Parish Centre will feature a highly-insulated and streamlined envelope with a ground source heat pump and solar panels.
Clad in zinc, timber and salvaged brick – the structure will feature a flexible hall and a lobby providing a street-facing gallery.
According to a statement from the architect: ‘A range of activities is envisaged, from the typical church services, events and festivals to community activities such as café and shop, musical events and performances, keep fit, brownies, ‘u3a’, blood donors, food bank, counselling and so on.’
Other planned spaces include a vestry, office, kitchen and meeting rooms.
The statement continued: ‘[The design] draws upon the important history of Saint Hilda in the north-east over many centuries, the local tradition of boatbuilding and the modern characteristics of the town of Redcar – shaped by its steelmaking heritage.’
