A masterplan by Will Alsop’s practice aLL Design for a new media village and 2,500 homes on a brownfield site in Purfleet, Essex has received a £27 million funding boost

Alsop produced the plan on behalf of Purfleet Centre Regeneration Ltd (PCRL), Thurrock Council’s development partner, which is promoting the regeneration.

Now housing developer and former housing association L&Q has announced it has signed up to provide £27 million towards the development.

Ken Dytor, managing director of Urban Catalyst and joint founder of PCRL said: ’We have put connectivity and sustainability at the heart of our plans, and L&Q’s input and experience will be crucial to delivering Purfleet’s regeneration.’

Alsop’s masterplan includes a 56,000m² media village, which the developers claim is the first purpose-built film and TV studio complex in the UK for 50 years. AHMM has been appointed to deliver this part of the scheme.

Alsop said: ’Purfleet is a town of joy and friendship facing South looking over the Thames.

‘Our job is to evolve it into a truly great place to live. We are delighted to be working with KSS Group, AHMM, Thurrock, L&Q and Urban Catalyst.’

The scheme received cross-party approval by Thurrock Council last summer. PCRL will now be going out for further local consultation on the master plan over the next six months.

Alsop’s nine-phase plan also covers landscape improvements, a new school and a remodelled railway station.

It will also provide shops and leisure amenities including a marina and oyster bar on a redeveloped waterfront.
