Manchester-based Buttress has won the competition to design a £21 million museum focussing on Blackpool’s history

The practice defeated Heneghan Peng and Austin-Smith Lord – who completed the museum’s feasibility study – to land the Blackpool Council-backed scheme.

Levitt Bernstein and Blackpool Library regeneration architect Bisset Adams were also shortlisted for the high-profile job.

Planned to complete in 2018, the project will transform Blackpool’s Winter Gardens Pavilion Theatre into a new museum telling the story of the Victorian seaside resort. A gallery for temporary exhibitions will also be included.

Buttress will draw up a strategic plan and concept design for the new building over the next 18 months. In-depth surveys and public consultations will also be completed.
