Buckley Gray Yeoman wins go-ahead for Chinatown revamp

Buckley Gray Yeoman has won planning for an a major refurbishment of a 1980s block at the gateway to London’s Chinatown

The scheme will reconfigure the existing Newport Sandringham building which spans the block between Newport Place and Charing Cross Road in the West End.

The proposals will see a colonnade which the architects described as ‘dark and cluttered’ filled in as part of the plans to ‘dramatically improve the retail frontage of the building’.

The colonnade will be replaced by new fully-glazed  shopfronts with inset perforated metal panels to allow natural light into the shops behind.

Paul White, director of BuckleyGrayYeoman said: ‘The Newport Sandringham scheme is a brilliant opportunity to create high quality public spaces that will bring real improvements to the experience of the eastern end of Chinatown, as well as over 100 metres of retail frontage along Charing Cross Road.

‘We have come up with a design for the retail frontages that is modern and sophisticated while retaining the cultural identity of Chinatown. Our design will help to enliven Newport Place and compliment the future public realm scheme.’

The practice’s proposals across London to infill the colonnades at James Stirling and Michael Wilford & Partners’ No 1 Poultry provoked a storm of protests and prompted a bid to get the Post-modern building listed (see AJ 11.06.15).

    Sorry but how is infilling to retail the Charing Cross Rd frontage improving public realm? It's not, it's making it firmly private. I suspect this is landlord-driven revenue raising, which is a shame.
