Buckley Gray Yeoman completes £5.5m Highgate school extension

Buckley Gray Yeoman has unwrapped this extension to Channing School in Highgate, north London

The £5.5 million scheme is the first phase of the practice’s masterplan for the school which will also see a new performing arts building complete next year.

The 1,645m2 brick building houses new form accommodation alongside badminton, hockey, netball and cricket facilities, a fitness suite, changing rooms and classrooms.


The architect’s view

Our masterplan was developed in response to a limited invited competition to create a vision for the new schools facilities. The grouping of the new buildings towards the southern end of the site in close proximity to the existing school was intentional to conserve and maintain the ‘green landscaping’ to the north whilst creating a ‘campus’ feel set around a new courtyard. The alignment with the school’s historic Founders Hall, and the dimensions and pitch of the new roofs mirror that of the existing building, creating a strong visual effect of continuity from one building to another. The orientation of the buildings defines a new ‘village green’ that will form the heart of the school, with landscaped amphitheatre seating, play spaces and covered walkways to connect the school’s departments.

We conceived of the building as three solid brick volumes and used a variety of shapes of handmade bricks to achieve a robust, monumental quality that is expressed throughout every building detail. By using traditional lime mortar we were able to minimise the need for movement joints, achieving a seamless finish to the buildings. The result is a sleek, confidently modern building that responds positively to the historic context and existing conditions of the site.
