AJ100 practice Broadway Malyan has submitted plans to convert the Gatton Manor hotel and golf club in Surrey into a health and wellness retreat
The scheme for the 70ha woodland site south-west of London has been inspired, the architect claims, by the ’medi-spa facilities popular in continental Europe’ which focus on ’prevention versus cure’ with buildings designed to bring people closer to nature.
The proposed development will see the original, but substantially altered, farmhouse replaced by the main retreat building which will sit alongside staff quarters and a new sports pavilion to support ’a much improved golf course’.
The facade of the new blocks will be clad in copper fins ’reminiscent of the tree trunks and branches’ of the surrounding woods.
Under the plans, the land separating the medi-spa from the golf course will be remodelled so that ’only the upper floors of the development will be visible from the approach drive’.
Broadway Malyan director Joe Witchell said: ’Our concept uses carefully selected materials and repeating architectural elements to create a very strong linear design that contrasts well with the undulating land form. This results in the main building appearing to touch the ground lightly.
’The support buildings of the sports pavilion and the staff accommodation complement the landscape using the same palette of materials inspired by the site’s clay soil and the nearby woodlands but with different architectural approaches.’
The application is expected to be considered by Mole Valley District Council in spring 2017.
