Broadway Malyan hopes to win more retail-led, mixed-use work after expanding this shopping centre scheme in southern Spain
The London-based practice, which has an office in Madrid, completed the Holea Centre in Huelva for French retail giant Carrefour.
Originally planned as a 15,800m2 hypermarket, the scheme grew to include 35,000m2 of additional retail and leisure space.
Broadway Malyan director Jorge Ponce said Carrefour was embarking on a strategy of getting more from its assets.
‘Our expert team is working in partnership with the retailer to realise the potential of its sites by introducing additional retail and leisure elements and uses,’ he said.
‘Huelva is a great example of that strategy in action with an attractive, varied and successful modern mall format with a Mediterranean design influence.’
The practice ‘hopes to have the opportunity to replicate this success on other projects’ according to Ponce.
The Holea Centre includes 10 screen cinemas, big brand shops, restaurants, leisure space and open air pathways.
Broadway Malyan said the design was influenced by Mediterranean villages and materials.
In response to the high summer temperatures in Huelva, the interior of the mall is crowned with a textile cover that gives natural shade and saves energy.
