Proposals to restore and redevelop a grade II*-listed 19th century crescent in York have been unveiled by developer Rushbond Group
Leeds-based Brewster Bye Architects’ scheme for St Leonard’s Place and the neighbouring listed properties on Museum Street will including luxury townhouses and apartments in a 40-home development.
Its proposals, due to be submitted for planning shortly, will return the crescent to its original residential use after a period when it was occupied by City of York council.
The development also includes a mix of six conversion and new-build mews properties planned for the rear of the main crescent.
Mark Finch, director of real estate at Rushbond Group, said the scheme would represent ‘the pinnacle of fine living’ in the city, as the terrace had been when it was constructed in the 1830s.
‘St Leonard’s Place was planned back in the early 19th century as a development that would lead the way in domestic architecture, bringing to York the elegance and style of properties only seen in parts of London at the time,’ he said.
‘It was an ambitious plan that provided the city with a great architectural legacy.
‘We plan to respect those aims and create the most stunning example of city-centre living in York.’
The developer bought the crescent from the council in 2006, although the authority stayed on as a tenant until staff relocated to new premises.
Earlier proposals for the John Harper-designed terrace included an 88-room hotel.
