Miles Watkins has been announced as the BRE’s new business development director
Watkins has left his job with Aggregate Industries to join the organisation, where he will focus on strengthening the BRE’s presence in the UK and overseas.
The appointment comes seven months after it was revealed the BRE’s flagship sustainable building certification system BREEAM was losing ground to rival green building standard LEED around the globe (AJ 28.02.13).
Research by the AJ uncovered that LEED had become the ‘dominant’ standard in emerging markets and Europe, with BREEAM leading only in the UK.
Explaining the task ahead of him, Watkins said: ‘I’ve been brought in to move the commercial acumen of the organisation forward [and] to grow the business in the UK and internationally.
‘Here in the UK we’ve got the tools and standards which enable people to build better so it’s all about getting that knowledge into the marketplace to drive up global standards.
‘We already have innovation parks in China and America and we have good ties with the International Sustainability Alliance. We have picked up a good amount of work in the Middle East recently.
‘We will be doing a market analysis and move forward on that basis.’
Commenting on the appointment BRE chief executive officer Peter Bonfield said: ‘Miles brings with him a wealth of knowledge across all areas of the construction supply chain as well as invaluable experience of leading on sustainability work. He is a well-known and much respected name in the sector, and he will be a great asset to BRE.’
